Magic Loop, 2022

23 July — 24 July 2022, Gallery Philosophie, Seoul

The performance Magic Loop introduces SEHIKYO’s core practice: garment-making.

SEHIKYO’s clothing begins with sourcing materials from secondhand markets, where the inherent characteristics of these materials—such as discoloration, tears, and fraying—along with signs of prior use, provide aesthetic cues and serve as key indicators throughout the making process. Starting with the first performer’s chosen technique, five performers successively engage in each other’s creative process. Responding to or resisting the fabric’s inherent qualities, each performer improvises by selecting suitable materials and techniques to create garments in real time. The title Magic Loop originates from a textile-making technique and is used here as an intuitive metaphor. It implies a circular, iterative process—one in which a repetitive method continues to evolve through a loop-like progression. This reflects how the first performer’s creation is passed along through to the fifth, with each participant contributing their own response, resulting in the continuous transformation and development of the fabric. It is also a narration of a parallel process in which five performers, wearing garments made using the same method, sequentially collaborate to complete a single T-shirt—each action building upon the last in a shared, cyclical act of making.
